On February 17, 1980, Buddy Baker stealthily piloted his 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass through the DAYTONA 500 field on his way to the win. The "Gray Ghost" – as his car would come to be known – set the track on fire with a blistering record average speed of 177.602 mph that still stands today. Several teams complained that Baker had an unfair advantage because the car's silver and gray design blended into the track's asphalt. As part of Darlington Raceway's throwback campaign this season, Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet SS will honor Baker's "Gray Ghost" by mimicking its paint scheme. The gray and black scheme will also feature orange Nationwide logos from the 1980's as the company celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2016.
